The village Cong in County Mayo is where much of the Quiet Man, starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara was filmed. Although you can retrace the steps of the actors throughout the town, there is much more to Cong than just a movie set. After a day exploring the beauty of Cong, what better way to relax than in the comfort of a Town and Country Homes Bed and Breakfast in Cong.
There is an authentic famine house nearby and a short walk will put you in a beautiful old abbey. There's a path there, by the river where you can walk through one of the most beautiful places in Ireland. A short distance out of the village stands magnificent Ashford Castle, perhaps the most dramatic castle in Ireland. Ashford Castle dates from the 12th Century, and you are permitted to stroll around the grounds and get a feeling of what Ireland was like hundreds of years ago.
The majestic monastic remains that adorn Cong today are the relics of a monastery built by the High King of Ireland, Turlach O'Connor in 1120 for the Augustinians. The monastery continued as a site of worship and learning, until it was suppressed in the reign of King Henry VIII. Stroll around the monastic cloisters and cast your mind back to the psalm chanting monks following the ornate Cross of Cong which is now in the National Museum. The Market Cross in the village commemorates two former abbots of the monastery.
