Bed and Breakfasts in County Louth

Louth, Ireland’s smallest county covers an area of 317 square miles between the River Boyne in the south to the dramatic scenery around Carlingford Lough and the Cooley Peninsula.
Louth was the scene of important events over the years and many chapters of Ireland’s history are illustrated by the county’s numerous archeological sites and relics from the past. The county town Dundalk is reputed to be the birthplace of the legendary hero Cuchulain. Dundalk is a good base for pursuing such activities as nature walks, salmon and trout fishing, golf and horse riding, while historic Drogheda is the “Gateway to the Boyne Valley” and the leading tourist attractions of passage tombs at Newgrange and Knowth which are just a few miles away.
History and Heritage
Louth was once part of the ancient kingdom of Oriel and is the setting for the great mythological tale involving the
hero Cuchulainn in the Tain Bo Cuailnge (‘Cattle Raid of Cooley’). The county is home to various monastic ruins dating back to the 5th century, Monasterboice Round Tower with it’s Celtic Cross and the Cistercian Abbey at Mellifont, two sites close to the town of Drogheda that are well worth a visit.
The Normans arrived in the 12th century which heralded considerable upheaval and change in the area but which also saw the development of what became Louth’s two major towns, Dundalk and Drogheda.
