About Wexford Town, a melting pot...
The town got its name from the Vikings and was developed by the Normans who invaded Ireland in 1169.
Half the names of the people are Norman. The other elements include not only the Gaelic, but also the English and Huguenot. Two famous writers from the town – John Banville and Billy Roche have surnames which are Huguenot and Norman - both are part of a cultural diversity which makes Wexford different.
The town, once a walled town, retains something of this earlier character with lots of interesting narrow streets, laneways and a long attractive quayside.
It is truly a cosmopolitan town which today boasts an eclectic variety of independent shops, hotels, gourmet restaurants, pubs, crafts and artisan food producers. It is one of the most popular Irish destinations for Irish tourists and increasingly for foreign visitors– the 120km of beaches and the moderate climate (affectionately known as the sunny south east!) being just one of the attractions.
