Moher House - Liscarney
Property Name: Moher House
Theme: Walking
Gardening and Walking or Walking and Gardening!! Which order of preference, Marian O’Malley can never decide as she enjoys them both so much. But there is one thing that she is certain about, she loves having guests to stay at her home Moher House, where both occupations are embraced.Moher House takes its name from Moher Lake just 200 yards away where guests can sit a while and watch the fishermen coming and going in their boats. Meanwhile, Marian is back at Moher House ensuring everything is in check to ensure maximum comfort and hospitality for her guests, from preparing afternoon tea with homemade scones or boiled cake for guests’ arrival, to setting the open turf fire on the cooler days to laying out her Irish pottery containing the vast array of tasty food available for breakfast. For those requiring further sustenance, Marian serves well known Kelly’s sausages and puddings from Westport with the ‘Moher Full Irish’!
It was once said that plants give oxygen for the lungs and the soul, well if that’s the case, inhale because you will be fully rejuvenated in the beautiful award winning gardens at Moher House. Everything stands to attention under the watchful eye of Marian who takes great pride in seeing her guests enjoy the fruits of her labour as they relax after a fulfilled day. Amongst the long list of things to do in the Westport area, energetic activities include clay pigeon shooting, sailing, adventure sports and horse riding, whilst the more sedate pastimes could include a visit to the Clew Bay Heritage Centre or the magnificent Westport House; why not simply take one of the many Scenic Drives, you won’t be disappointed.
Having tended the house and the garden, the ubiquitous Marian likes to slip out for a walk, her other great love. Though she doesn’t have the time to do the longer walks in the Westport Walking guide, she has covered some of the shorter ones, such as Brackloon Woods and of course she has climbed the king of them all, Croagh Patrick. But she knows all the walks like the back of her hand and can direct you to interesting points along the way taking in landscapes of mountains, lake and seashore. Some trails are within walking distance of Moher House so no need for wheels to get to Owenwee Bog or Killeenacoff and for the trails further away Marian will be delighted to drop you to the starting point and pick you up on your return, often at the local pub in Drummin which is enroute home. Before you set off, Marian will inform you of the day’s weather ahead and provide you with information on the walking trail along with a generous packed lunch that will keep you motoring till teatime!
When prearranged Marian will create a wonderful dinner at Moher House, her specialties being fresh salmon and local lamb. Finish your wonderful day with an Irish Coffee, a present from Marian, in front of the open peat fire and let the feeling of earned tiredness envelop you - home from home according to Marian’s many previous guests.
