When seeking out your accommodation in the village of Gurteen, nestled in the hills of Sligo, a good clue is that it is not too far from the local spire!!

Jacci and Neil Conlon opened their doors two years ago but it seems they have a lifetime of experience when it comes to looking after their guests.   After a great nights sleep in most comfortable beds amidst an abundance of plump cushions, breakfast will leave you spoilt for choice.  Have a chat with Jacci and Neil about the day ahead, discuss your music workshop as they have close connections with the folk at the Coleman Traditional Music Heritage Centre and are very knowledgeable of the history or if there are any new events occurring.  There are also many other novel attractions in the Sligo area for those not so interested in the Irish Music scene.  For those with an eye for the birds visit the nearby Bird of Prey and Owl sanctuary, spectacular.  For those feeling in need of replenishment, the Celtic Seaweed Bath will put pep in your step.  For a great family outing the Loughkey Forest and Activity Park is the place for you.

Music is the real soul to this home.  On arrival don’t be surprised to hear lively Irish music playing in the background, from one of the many CD’s available for guests to listen to.  Church View is just down the road from the Coleman Traditional Irish Music Centre, this centre is dedicated to ensuring that the tradition of Irish music remains a living one to folk of all age and nationality- ‘an traidisiún beo’!  There are many events on in this centre throughout the year, such as fiddle competitions, traditional concerts and ceílí through to music feis.  Workshops are held in all instruments including fiddle, flute, banjo, bodhrán and tin whistle for all ages and levels.  Live music is held in the 120 seat theatre twice weekly during the summer and at regular intervals throughout the year.    In the case of a group of 10 or more attending a workshop, Jacci will be delighted to facilitate a meeting with the tutor beforehand along with a schedule of events and classes.  There is nothing the Conlon’s enjoy more than their guests coming home and practicing what they have learned that day.  For those not so adept, the availability of tin whistles and a bodhrán in Church View means they can give it ‘a lash’.  Failing that there are lovely books on Irish Music to browse through.

The beauty of staying in the heart of Gurteen is, the traditional music pubs are just a walk away.  Don’t worry about the little ones, the babysitter at Church View has that sorted, go out and enjoy yourself, have a pint of the black stuff and sit back and enjoy the ‘Craic agus Ceol’!!
