Themed Bed Breakfasts - Clanabogan Country House
Property: Clanbogan Country House, Omagh, County Tyrone
Theme(s): Walking
Exuding ‘olde world charm’ throughout, Clanabogan House is a fine Georgian residence full of character, the main body of the house where guests stay dates back to the early-mid 1800’s. Mary & Robert Montgomery bought Clanabogan fifteen years ago when it was derelict and have lovingly restored and refurbished it. The seclusion of this house, in 5 acres of lovely gardens and woodland belies its close proximity to the nearby town of Omagh. Take a stroll down the beautiful Yew Tree Avenue, comprising 32 yew trees, 16 each side, joining to form a completely covered walkway which remains dry, even on the wettest of days.
An avid walker herself, Mary has a great love for the outdoor life, however she is well aware that it does not suit all. She is happy to recommend the many other pursuits available in the area. From a bit of relaxed heritage & culture at the Ulster American Folk Park to the Ballynahatty Fast Track and plenty more besides. Bring out the
inner ‘Tiger’ with a practice on the Golf Driving Range which is on the other side of the lane to Clanabogan House, you don’t even have to go as far as the road, there is also a bar there if you fancy a little tipple!! How handy is that?
When staying at Clanabogan House, it is worth going for a walk purely for the wonderful packed lunch that Mary provides. Cold meats, salads, sandwiches, fruit, cheeses, smoothies, homemade yoghurts, a great choice of food for you to pick from, beautifully packed in a backpack with shatterproof plates, glasses & cups and a rug on which to spread your picnic. Having walked many of the local routes individually and with groups of friends and family, Mary is quite the authority when it comes to heading off for the day in the Sperrin area. A five day weather forecast is always available along with maps of various walks suitable for all levels of walkers from the moderate to the more experienced, individuals or groups. Walks can be tailored to meet the individual needs, from a more mountainous trek along the ridge of the Derg Valley to the historical Bradan Walk taking in a tomb and dolmen. There’s the family friendly Loughmacorry Trail or the Nature Trail at Gortin Glen. Too big a selection to mention individually, but you’ll be spoilt for choice. Many of the shorter walks can start off at Clanabogan House and finish up there too. For the really energetic, you could walk about 15 kms along nice quiet back roads to get to the starting point. If you enjoy the walking, but prefer someone else to do the navigation, Martin McGuigan is the man for the job an extremely experienced guide walker and Mary will organize contact if pre requested. On returning home, lever off the boots and park them up for the night in the store room along with any wet clothing. There is also a tumble dryer available if necessary, (hopefully not!!)
If the aching joints don’t fancy going too far in the evening, make use of the wonderful Bar-b-q facility in the peace and quiet of the gardens. Mary will have a range of food suitable for you to purchase and you can create your own delicious meal. A bit of steak would be nice, plenty of protein to get you going again tomorrow!
