Slieve League, one of the Top 10 “High”lights of the Wild Atlantic Way
Forget the crowds at the Cliffs of Moher and try Slieve League as an alternative instead.
The cliffs of Slieve League
The cliffs at Slieve League in County Donegal are twice as high as the Cliffs of Moher with a sheer drop of 2000’ into the Atlantic Ocean. There is no interpretative centre, so there are no crowds unlike the Cliffs of Moher that get a million visitors a year. So, you are unlikely to see a single tour bus, in fact you will most likely have all that wild, raw beauty to yourself! It’s not fenced off, other than for safety purposes, so no queues and no admission charges!
You can admire this magnificent sight from up top or you can hike (carefully) along the cliff top as far as ‘One Man’s Pass’ (it’s called that for good reason) to the summit. Or you could take a boat trip along the base of the cliffs from the harbour in Teelin during the summer.
Keep an eye out for dolphins who often play beside the Giants chair and the sea eagles. Once upon a time an eagle snatched a child and flew out to sea with it, while all the locals gathered to pray at a holy well for the safe return of the baby. This is a true story told to me by Paddy, who along with his wife Siobhan run Tí Linn an award winning cultural centre and café at nearby in Bunglass. Paddy used to be a fisherman but has since retrained with a Masters in Archeology and a Degree in Tourism which he combines with his new role of barista, guide and storyteller, the baby was returned by the way....
