Either way you will experience the warm hospitality of your Mayo hosts who are waiting to welcome you. Here are some of our favourite places to visit in Mayo.
The Great Western Greenway is a greenway rail trail for cyclists, walkers and runners in County Mayo. It is 42 kilometres long and follows the old Westport to Achill railway line, passing through the towns of Newport and Mulranny as it runs along the coast of Clew Bay.
Westport House and the Pirate Adventure Park has become one of Ireland’s best loved attractions and was recently voted one of the Best Family Visitor Attractions in Ireland and its no surprise with the heritage, family-fun, camping and adventure activity on offer. The 18th Century Westport House is privately owned and operated by the Browne family, who are direct descendants of Grace O’ Malley, the famous 16th Century Pirate Queen of Connaught.
Beaches - Some of the best beaches in Ireland are to be found in the area. Mayo is very proud of the fact that it has more blue flag beaches than any other county in Ireland. When the weather is good, you can find long golden sand beaches where you may almost be alone. Some of the best can be found around Achill Island but there are lots in the County.
Mayo has two major pilgrimage sites: Croagh Patrick (Ireland's 'holy mountain'), and the Marian Shrine of Our Lady at Knock.
Croagh Patrick Mountain has been a pilgrimage site for hundreds of years in honour of Saint Patrick, Ireland's patron saint, who fasted for forty days on the summit of the mountain in 441 and built a church there.
The National Shrine of Our Lady of Knock has been one of the focal points of Catholic worship since 1879 it is one of the important Marian shrines in Europe, less known than Lourdes, but nonetheless attracting about one and a half million pilgrims a year.
