Summer in Ireland

Growing up I definitely think I took summer in Ireland for granted. Home overlooked a scenic harbour, where summer days were spent crab fishing off the pier, taking boat rides and enjoying regular dips in the lapping waters.

Craic agus Ceol

My summer job was waitressing in the local restaurant which had the most spectacular views out across the bay. Seafood was a speciality and summer evenings were spent serving French, American, German, English and Italian visitors. As well as serving the meals, the staff would talk with the tourists about the local area and then point them in the direction of the adjoining pub next door for a night of music and craic. Once the restaurant closed, shift over, the music and laughter from next door would make us all forget our tiredness and we’d head in to join the fun. Visitors would mix, chat and dance along the locals and a great night was always had by all. B&Bs were plentiful in the region and we would always advise visitors to stay in one, as we knew the hosts would provide the perfect Irish holiday experience.

Days off were spent cycling with friends to the local sandy beach where we would hire horses and gallop along the golden sands with the wind in our hair. Then, we’d sit on the beach, ice pop in hand and just enjoy everything that was going on around and take the odd dip in the sea. There were always summer festivals taking place and the biggest decisions we’d have to make were which one we’d go to. Looking back there was no appreciation for the beautiful scenery or the safe environment that I grew up in, it was just taken for granted.

A Warm Welcome Awaits

Now that I’m older, when I go out for a meal in one of the local restaurants, I can hear the different lilts from the visitors to the town. I get a bit of a buzz from this and feel pride as I know they are going to have an amazing holiday. I really appreciate Ireland and its beauty. The climate is never too stifling, making is ideal for an active holiday. Ireland’s coastline and varied landscapes cater for everything from adventure sports to tranquil lazy days, exploring castles and historic sites. But I think the most amazing thing about Ireland, is that it hasn't changed too much over the years and neither has its people. Visitors will always get a special welcome.
