History and Heritage

History and heritage is an important part of Westmeath. The county was officially established in 1543 and is said to have once been the meeting place of the five ancient provinces of Ireland. Westmeath boasts so many fascinating historical sites including, the 19th century Tullynally Castle, one of Ireland’s largest. It is truly is a sight to behold, surrounded by 12 acres of magnificent walled gardens. The castle overlooks Lough Derryveagh, the legendary lake of the Children of Lir and is bursting with character. Other attractions include Athlone Castle, ancient churches and monastic settlements.

Outdoor Leisure Pursuits

Westmeath also caters for sports enthusiasts, with its famous rivers, lakes and The Royal Canal. It is the ideal destination for boating, water-sports and is regarded as an anglers paradise.  There is an unmatched variety of fish to enjoy and the area’s angling facilities are top-class. A cruise of the River Shannon comes highly recommended as well! Equestrian pursuits and golfing are also popular.

Scragh Bog Nature Reserve - Conservation of Beauty and Wildlife

Widely known as the Lakeland of Ireland, Westmeath is home to one of the few remaining acidic raised bogs in Europe. Scragh Bog Nature Reserve located close to the picturesque setting of Lough Owel is possibly the best illustration in Ireland of the transition from alkaline fen to acidic raised bog. It covers an area almost 23 acres and is of international importance.
