The Historic Heartlands

This part of Ireland’s Ancient East takes in Offaly, Laois, Kildare, Tipperary, Limerick, Carlow and Kilkenny.

The Historic Heartlands - Ireland's Ancient EastOne of its key attractions is the Rock of Cashel, which is a sacred towering rock, known for being both a geological masterpiece, as well as a place of great historical and religious significance, as it boasts a tower, gothic cathedral and castle. Kilkenny Castle must also be put on the to-do list, even just for the beauty of its setting alone. The sprawling estate was built in 1195 but was transferred to the people of Kilkenny in 1967, and since, the restored grounds and gardens have been made open to the public. Clonmacnoise is another fantastic attraction, located on the banks of the River Shannon since the 6th Century, and is accredited as one of Europe’s leading centres for religion and learning.
