Explore the Midlands

The four counties that are found in the Midlands of Ireland are Longford, Westmeath, Offaly and Laois. Without coastlines, these locations can often be overlooked as holiday destinations but they have many more unique attractions to offer instead. Wherever your interests lie, the Midlands will have you it covered, from ancient historical sites and fascinating culture, to wonderful outdoor trails and fantastic eateries!

Longford

Explore the MidlandsLongford is located in the heart of the Lakelands, making it the ideal location for angling and other water-sport activities. Taking a boat out onto one of the many lakes and rivers is a must to experience the unspoilt beauty first-hand. A visit to St. Mel’s Cathedral is also recommended, as the newly-restored stunning 19th Century building, has been recently reopened!

Westmeath

Explore the MidlandsWestmeath is the perfect holiday destination for outdoor activities, with its rolling green landscapes and abundance of lakes and rivers! A visit to Belvedere House, Gardens and Park is an excellent day out. It is open to the public and is a breath-taking parkland estate set in the midst of 160 acres on the shores of Lough Ennel.

Offaly

Explore the MidlandsOffaly is known as  Ireland’s historical crossroads and boasts some of the most fascinating attractions. A visit to Clonmacnoise is a must as the outstanding historical site features three high crosses, seven churches, two round towers and a cathedral! Charleville Castle is equally as impressive and guided tours of the gothic-style architecture and its interesting background are available.

Laois

Explore the MidlandsLaois is Ireland’s most inland county in Ireland, lending itself to gorgeous unspoilt landscapes, green forests and green sloping plains. Explore one of the many way-marked trails along the beautiful Slieve Bloom Mountains, either on foot, by bicycle or even, on horseback. The Abbeyleix Sensory Gardens are well worth a visit as it is a garden of history that appeals to all the senses, with amazing sights, sounds and smells.
