Meet your host…

Julia O'Connor

I have been in the hospitality business since 1991 and I do enjoy meeting people and engaging in conversation. During the winter months I do a lot of walking nearby. I've also walked abroad; Grand Cayon in the U.S., Matchu Pitchu, South America, las Alpujarras, Spain and Brittany, France. I also cycle, I've completed the Ring of Kerry, cycled in Poland and France. I also cook and enjoy having people for dinner. When totally relaxed I enjoy reading and am a member of the local book club.

Killarney Road

In a serene rural setting upon an acre of mature gardens, An Bruachan (meaning "little brook" in Irish) is a picturesque haven in beautiful County Kerry. Guests can unwind in queen-size beds, wake up to breathtaking river views and enjoy complimentary tea/coffee on arrival. Host Julia O’Connor is an experienced walker and cyclist and shares her knowledge of the area’s trails. Just 1km from the heritage town of Kenmare, guests can enjoy restaurants, art galleries, golf, horse riding and fishing. An Bruachan is an excellent base for tours of the Ring of Kerry and Beara Peninsula.

Julia's place was fabulous! The location was superb. We were able to see downtown Kenmare and walk home within 5 minutes. Julia made us feel at home in her quaint B & B while we also enjoyed her lovely blooming gardens and gentle babbling brook. Her breakfast omelette, coffee and morning tea were the best in town! Perfect location for Killarney National Park and the Ring of Kerry.

We stayed at Au Bruachan for two nights in mid-June, and were very pleased with the lovely room, the setting, the proximity to Kenmare., and the hospitality provided by Julia and her staff. I regret that I do not remember the name of the delightful lady who served our wonderful breakfasts and provided us with very good travel advice, but she was very enjoyable to talk to. We should have taken more advantage of the setting along the beautiful little brook in back (wine and cheese at the picnic table?), but were too busy for our own good traveling the Ring of Kerry, and enjoying the pubs and music of Kenmare.

The warm welcome from Julia complete with lemon pound cake and tea was just the start of a delightful two days here. In fact, it was our favorite of the five different lodgings we experienced during our time in Ireland. Our room was very spacious, clean and quiet. Breakfast was amazing omelets and the BEST brown bread of our trip. Yet none of these accolades can compare to the treat of visiting with Julia. She was so helpful with information about Kenmare, current and historical Ireland, local restaurants, hiking options, and fun stories about some colorful characters. Highly, highly recommended! We hope to make it back soon!

Au Bruachan and Kenmare was one of our favorite stops in Ireland. Julia was warm and inviting and her home was perfectly located! I felt as though I was staying with a local and was able to get a bit of a sense of the community. I was able to walk into town to stretch my legs after a long day in the car exploring the Ring of Kerry. This will definitely be a repeat visit.
