It was 'This Big'!

Roger Cummings from Bristol, England tells of coarse fishing in Ireland

My friends and I make an annual trip to Ireland to experience some of finest coarse fishing Europe has to offer. We’ve fished everywhere from Lough Derg in Co. Donegal to Co. Cork’s River Blackwater and beyond to the bountiful lakes and rivers of Co. Cavan and Co. Monaghan. Every spot has been a treat. Not only does Ireland have some of the best fishing but its famous Irish hospitality is no myth.

Triumphant Trout Fishing

As a gang of four ‘middle aged’ men we’re known to be fond of our home comforts. Staying in B&Bs provides us with those home comforts and a lot more besides. The facilities for anglers are second to none. To paint the picture, our most recent trip was to Lough Erne. We brought along John, our newest angling recruit, to see what all the fuss was about.  A fishing newbie, John received a baptism of fire, or should I say cold, with a biting wind on the lake on day one. A bit weather-beaten but triumphant after catching a 12lb trout, John returned back to Mary and Colm’s B&B to be greeted with a warm ‘cuppa’ tea and keen ears for his trophy catch story.

Mary and Colm Assist

Typical of Irish B&Bs, Mary and Colm were the perfect hosts for beginner and experienced anglers alike. Nothing was too much trouble. All the usual facilities were available, from drying rooms to bait fridges, but the most valuable resource was Colm and Mary themselves. They organised our licences, the hire of our 17-foot boat and sorted out our ghillie extraordinaire, Damien. He took John under his wing and was a wealth of information on local spots.

B&B may be short for Bed and Breakfast, but that doesn’t even scratch the surface for what to expect. Needless to say, John will be coming again next year to fish in Lough Owel in Co. Westmeath as recommended by Colm.
