The Barrow Way Walking Trail in Co Kildare
The Barrow Way walk is a National Waymarked Trail that is located in County Kildare. The linear walk is graded as easy, which makes it suitable for all skill levels. The trek will take approximately four days to complete and will cross over into the counties of Carlow and Laois. The trek can be broken up into sections, with excellent overnight accommodation available along the route. Many of the B&Bs in the area are categorised as Walkers Welcome! This means that they will have drying and storage facilities on the premises and an excellent knowledge of the Barrow Way trail.
The trail was made passable in the eighteenth century with the inclusion of canal footpaths, towpaths and riverside roads. The majestic River Barrow will be close at hand along most of your journey, with the terrain consisting of grassy towpaths, tracks and quiet roads. The Barrow Way walk is a peaceful and tranquil trek that passes through several interesting towns and villages including, Rathangan, Athy and Carlow town.
If you feel you do not want to commit to a four day walking break, the Barrow Way has a great selection of shorter trails. Why not try the Athy to Bert Bridge trail? It is only 3.7km in length and graded as an easy trek that will only take an hour to complete. The Athy to Maganey trail is 11km in length and graded as a moderate walk, so you will need to have a good level of fitness. This interesting trail will take approximately three hours to complete. You can expect to see hares, herons and hawks long both routes with plenty of interesting sites to see along the way.
B&Bs who specifically cater for walkers will display this symbol outside of their homes. The Approved B&Bs will supply suitable storage facilities for outdoor clothing, including shelving, hangers, wall hooks and drying facilities. Your host has been given this award due to the facilities they provide in their home, their own love of walking and their specific knowledge of the walking trails in their location.
