Terrific Walking Trails in Tipperary
Tipperary is the largest inland county in Ireland and enjoys varied scenery, landscapes and terrains, all these factors can add up to a great walking and hiking experience. You will find different levels of walks and hiking routes, so that there be a trail that will suit everyone from the experienced to the not so experienced walker. There are walks that will take you along peaceful river paths, glorious mountain ranges and interesting forest trails. Best of all, there is an immense selection to choose from!
National Loop Walk
There is a National Loop Walk near the town of Clonmel called the Glenbawn Loop. It is 2km long, which is a nice length if you don’t want a walk that is too lengthy or taxing. The trail will take you approximately one hour to complete and you will be able to enjoy the natural beauty, peace and tranquility of Glenbawn wood.
Glen of Aherlow
Another great loop walk that takes only one hour to complete is in the Glen of Aherlow, the walk is called the Woodland Loop, which is near the town of Lisvarrinane. The walk takes you through pure woodland which is well signposted, so you can relax and enjoy your beautiful surroundings without wondering are you taking the correct path! Things to see along your walk include various trees, shrubs, wildlife and an old famine house
Knockanroe Wood
For the more energetic walker the Knockanroe Wood – Silvermines looped walk is an interesting mix of forestry track and woodland trails. The walk is around 4.5km and will take about two hours to complete. There is spectacular view of Nenagh, Lough Derg, Silvermines and the surrounding areas along this walking trail, coupled with attractive trees, shrubs and wildlife.
Devil's Bit Loop walk
Or maybe you would enjoy the Devil's Bit Loop walk which is near the town of Templemore. The name is interesting in itself! The walk is 5km in length and will take approximately one and half hours to complete. There is a mixed terrain and you will enjoy spectacular views including the Galtee Mountains along the trail.
So there is no doubt that Tipperary is a terrific destination for a walking holiday. For safety reasons, always remember to inform someone of where you are heading on your walking expeditions and an approximate time of return. Make sure you have suitable footwear, clothing and of course a well charged mobile phone. Apart from that, just make sure you have loads of fun!

The National Famine Way is a new 167km walking and cycling trail that spans from Strokestown, Co Roscommon to Dublin. This historic trail follows the footsteps of 1,490 emigrants who were forced to walk this route during the 1847 famine.
