Adventure Activities in Sligo | Wild Atlantic Way
It’s been a while since my last adventure holiday so it’s time to get back on the bike and hit up the West coast. Sligo, also known as Yeats' County, will always be my destination of choice. This county ranks highly in the adventure catalogue as it's right on the Wild Atlantic Way and has recently been made popular by the monstrous waves that crash into the coast throughout the year. Obviously, surfing will feature highly on the list of things to do but there are many more adventure activities to choose from. Take Sligo by land and sea!
Sligo Surfing
It’s no secret that the best waves in Ireland are along the Sligo and South Donegal coast, but some surf spots remain undiscovered by non-locals. If you’re looking for a few fun waves then the Sligo beach breaks are your best bet. Strandhill and Streedagh are always a charmer but if you’re looking for a challenge, then Easkey and Enniscrone are best suited to you. If you’re a big wave surfer and the conditions are right, then a trip to Mullaghmore Head is the perfect choice for you.
Climbing, Hiking and Biking in Sligo
If you’re looking for a break from all the water activities then it's time to take to the land! Sligo is a playground for climbers, hikers and bikers. The mountainous terrain provides perfect trails and inclines to test anyone’s ability. Ben Bulben Mountain dominates the skyline of North Sligo. Reaching the summit you’re rewarded with a priceless view of the county and its surroundings. This climb should be on everyone’s to-do list when in Sligo. A hiking trail that should definitely be on the agenda is Knocknarea Mountain, the resting place of Queen Maeve in West Sligo.
If you plan on bringing your mountain bike to Yeats' County, it’ll be your best decision yet! There’s 74 km of forest tracks, tiny roads and open moorland paths on The Sligo Way trail to get your heart racing. The trail starts from Lough Talt in the Ox Mountains and continues all the way to Dromhair Town in County Leitrim. The views along the way are just something else!
