Top 5 things to do and see in Cork

Cork is Ireland’s biggest county and what a beautiful county it is! If your passion is history or natural scenic beauty, fine dining or adventure, Cork most definitely has it covered. Located in the South-Western region of Ireland, it is a county that caters for everyone from families who want to keep the children entertained to couples who want to relax and do a bit of exploring. Adventure seekers who love to surf, sail, climb, hike or mountain bike will not be disappointed either! Here are my top 5 things to do and see in Cork.

Cork City

Top 5 things to see and do in Cork CityCork City, once a small merchant town, is now a cosmopolitan and vibrant metropolis. The city is built on an island on the River Lee and the centre is spanned by many bridges giving it a continental air. Cork is a city with a very rich historical and archaeological heritage, much of it still in evidence today. The best way to learn about the city’s history is to take guided walking tour.

Cork City Gael

Top 5 things to see and do in Cork CitCork City Gael was a former prison in the 19th century. The magnificent castle-like building gives visitors a true insight into the life of the prisoners who were housed there over a century ago. The cells are restored, with life-like models of prisoners and guards that give you an eerie and realistic feel for what the inmates endured back in the day. Audio guides are available to ensure you get the most out of your prison experience.

Blarney Castle

Top 5 things to see and do in Cork CitBlarney Castle attracts over 200,000 visitors a year! Located just 10km from Cork City, the castle’s most famous attraction is the Blarney Stone. Visitors queue up to kiss the Blarney Stone at the top of the castle tower. It is said that once you kiss the stone you’ll never be lost for words again. Visitors can explore the castle ruins including its dungeon with vast underground passages and chambers.  A stroll through the gardens cannot be missed!

Fota Wildlife Park

Top 5 things to see and do in Cork CitFota Wildlife Park is a great day out for all the family where you get to see amazing animals from all over the world. Just 15 minutes from Cork City, the park is home to thousands of animals including giraffes, penguins, zebras and cheetahs to name a few. Fota Wildlife Park also cares for several different animal species in danger of extinction.

Wild Atlantic Way Cork

Top 5 things to see and do in Cork CitCork’s natural scenic beauty and its stunning coastline is part of the Wild Atlantic Way. It is awash with inlets, tiny coves, safe harbours and sandy beaches, making it ideal for an array of watersport activities including sailing, windsurfing and fishing. There are B&Bs dotted throughout the county that specifically cater for your chosen activity. They’ll have special storage space for your equipment and have expert knowledge and interest in your leisure pursuit.
