How to do the Wild Atlantic Way?
The Wild Atlantic Way is Ireland’s newest and most magnificent road trip along the West coast of the country.
It takes you on a journey of discovery from the very south of Ireland in Cork and Kerry, up to the North of Ireland in Donegal where you can experience the most captivating rugged coastline in the world. All along this route you’ll visit Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim, Clare, Limerick and Galway, where there are towns and villages off the beaten track and just waiting to be explored.
How should you do the Wild Atlantic Way?
The long answer is to take a month or better still a year off work, school or whatever it is that you do and start at the top with Derry and ramble your way on down along the West Coast of Ireland, out and around the Southern tip as far as Cork City and beyond.
The Wild Atlantic Way claims to be the longest defined coastal route in the world, covering some 2500 kms, which Google or anyone else who has never actually driven in Ireland will tell you is perfectly feasible to drive in 41 hours and 40 minutes!
While that might be the case on perfect roads elsewhere, it certainly is not true of Ireland, besides what hurry is on you? Having driven all over Ireland in the most favourable conditions ever (the summer of 2013) we can reliably inform you that a round trip of 100 kms as in the Inishowen 100, County Donegal or the Beara Peninsula in County Cork, both just tiny sections of the Wild Atlantic Way, realistically takes a minimum of one day, preferably two, to do the scenery any justice, never mind the elasticated road signs and endless photo opportunities.
So, the short answer in our opinion is to do the Wild Atlantic Way in bite size pieces or easily identifiable county-by-county chunks. The whole point is to take your time and really get to know and enjoy this wild, wonderful and outrageously beautiful coastal route. So, our advice is to concentrate on just one or two, or even three at the most sections, to really let the Wild Atlantic Way seep into your senses and get under your skin.
