The 20th Commonwealth Games

The 20th Commonwealth Games kicked off last night with a spectacular opening ceremony in Glasgow.  The Queen officially opened the games before a 40,000-strong crowd in Glasgow's Celtic Park.   The opening ceremony was very entertaining with many acts including dancing Tunnock's teacakes, Rod Stewart, Susan Boyle and the Scottish Ballet performing to an acoustic version of a Proclaimers song.  Then there was a huge cheer as the crowd welcomed the thousands of athletes from 71 nations and territories taking part.  Northern Ireland was led by cyclist Martyn Irvine carrying the flag.  The Games will feature 17 sports across 11 days of competition, beginning on Thursday.

We wish Team NI every success in the games.  There are a total of 117 local athletes from 14 sports participating in the Games.  “Extraordinary athletes from an extraordinary place”

There is so much to see and do in Northern Ireland, with its stunning coastline, breathtaking views and really friendly people.  Booking a B&B in Ireland gives you the unique experience of staying with an Irish family, and with prices from only €30pps its great affordable accommodation where you can be sure of a warm welcome and a home cooked breakfast (all included in the price!).
