5 must see Events in Limerick | City of Culture 2014

Limerick is the City of Culture for 2014 and as such has a packed schedule of events running throughout the year. Below are just a few events happening in June and September that are worth going to see if you get the chance.

Special Olympics Opening Ceremony – June 12

From June 12th to 15th, 1,500 athletes from all over Ireland will descend on Limerick for the Games and participate in 13 sports competitions. This very special event will recognise and showcase the ability of the Special Olympics Ireland athletes.

No Fit State Circus (BIANCO) – June 14-22

No Fit State Circus is the UK’s leading large-scale contemporary circus company, bringing together the best performers in the world with a wide range of circus skills: swinging trapeze, aerial straps and rope, cloud swing, dance trapeze, trampoline, juggling, hand-balance and acrobatics.

Bill Whelan & Sir James Galway – June 21

Star performers from the worlds of classical and traditional music join the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra to celebrate the music of Grammy-winning Riverdance composer Bill Whelan. The evening will feature the first performances of Whelan’s new work for the internationally renowned flutist Sir James Galway and promises to be a great night.

European Mountain Bike Marathon Championships – 14-15 June 2014

The European Marathon Mountain Bike Championships roll into Ballyhoura in County Limerick for two days of riding on some of the most picturesque trails in the country. This will be the first event of its caliber to be hosted in Ireland. Top mountain bikers from Europe will compete in this white knuckle marathon.

The Giant’s Journey – September 5-7

It’s just been announced that as part of the Limerick City of Culture 2014 events the French pageantry company Royal de Luxe the largest outdoor theatre company in the world, is to bring The Giant’s Journey to Limerick for 72 hours of free entertainment. The 30 foot Giant is a mechanical mythical creature to be hoisted and moved along by people and pulleys. The Giant’s Journey will be curated especially for Limerick, with a story for and about the city and is expected to be the largest outdoor event to take place in Ireland in 2014.
