Lissadell House reopens its doors to the public

This Friday, Taoiseach Enda Kenny is set to reopen the doors of Lissadell House in County Sligo to the public after five years of legal dispute. Owners of the ancestral home, Eddie Walsh and Constance Cassidy have been influenced by their seven children and well wishers throughout the legal battle to pick up where they left off and continue their vision for the Estate.

Lissadell House – An Historic Gem

The home was bought by Eddie and Constance from Josslyn Gore Booth in 2003 and was refurbished to its former glory by Eddie and his family. Eddie’s vision to showcase Lissadell House to the general public never disappeared and the stunning house, gardens, stable blocks and grounds can once again be appreciated by the public.

The Estate has a fascinating historical background. Countess Markievicz was the first of the five children of Henry Gore Booth who spent her childhood at Lissadell House. She is most famous for her leadership in the Irish Easter Rebellion of 1916 and the struggle for freedom in Ireland. Lissadell House also has strong ties to world renowned poet William Butler Yeats. The poet spent many years of his childhood visiting the Estate along with his brother for cricket and horse racing and made friends with the Gore Booth sisters Constance and Eva.

In recent years Lissadell House has welcomed Leonard Cohen and Westlife to the Estate to play sold out concerts in 2010 and there are plans to continue this new found tradition, but for this weekend Friday will see the Gardens reopen to the public for everyone to appreciate while the House will reopen on Saturday.

If you find yourself touring along the West Coast make sure to stop off at Lissadell house and discover the sheer beauty of the Estate.
