Offaly – The Historical Crossroads of Ireland
You’ll find County Offaly in the heart of Ireland. Situated dead centre between Dublin and Galway, you may pass through on your way from the capital to the Wild Atlantic Way or vice versa, but County Offaly is more than just a passing county. The Crossroads County of Ireland is a major historical hub.
Offaly’s Historical Places of Interest
Tullamore Dew Whiskey Distillery Tour is one of the main attractions which draws huge crowds each year. It is here where Daniel E. Williams created the first triple distilled, triple blended Irish whiskey. The Visitors Centre is situated on the banks of the Grand Canal in the newly renovated distillery. The tour mixes storytelling with audiovisuals to immerse visitors into the history of the famous whiskey. Beginning with the birth of the brand, visitors are brought through the process of how Tullamore Dew is made, right through to a complimentary whiskey tasting.
Birr Castle Demesne could easily take up your whole day as you explore the surroundings of the stunning 50-hectare castle grounds. The Gardens are quite possibly the greatest in Ireland and contain some of the rarest tree species found in the country. There is a beautiful waterfall that can be found in the Victorian Fernery that must be appreciated. Something that is equally impressive is the Great Telescope. The reflecting telescope was the largest in the world for over 70 years and is arguably the largest historic scientific instrument still in working condition today. Make sure to visit Birr Castle in the summer as you can access the main living quarters of the castle from May through to August.
Clonmacnoise is undoubtedly Ireland’s best known monastic site. Founded in the 6th Century, the site includes three high crosses, a cathedral, seven churches and two round towers. Visitors can also avail of the Visitors Centre which includes audiovisual presentations, a number of cross slabs and the 9th Century Cross of the Scriptures. You don’t have to be a history buff to enjoy this attraction as the scenery and architecture alone will capture your attention!
