The Wild Atlantic Way | South West Adventure

This week we are still in the South Western region of the Wild Atlantic Way. There are just too many amazing sights to see here! You might start your Wild Atlantic Way adventure in Shannon, so why not start and finish in County Clare taking in the Loop Head Peninsula and the impressive Cliffs of Moher.

Clare's Natural Attractions

The Cliffs of Moher are one of Ireland's most stunning landmarks and we'll be doing a unique feature on this over the next few weeks. They are Ireland's most visited natural attraction and stretch for 8km (5miles), as the crow flies along, along the coast of County Clare in the West of Ireland. These mammoth cliffs reach 214m (702 feet) at their highest point at Knockaradakin just North of O' Brien's Tower.

You can also enjoy the Aran Islands and the coastal drive from Doolin to Dunquaire Castle in Kinvara taking in Black Head. This area is known as the Burren, a famous karst region with strange tiered, grey limestone landscape which was once the seabed of a tropical ocean, once upon a long time ago. The Burren is a sight to behold in early summer when it is carpeted with gentians and wild orchids.

Galway - Land of the Sea

Galway City, Ireland's home away from home for many Irish people is sandwiched between Clare and Connemara, land of inky blue loughs and towering heather strewn mountains. The subject of a 100 postcard images, Kylemore Abbey looms into reality as you round a bend in the Maam Valley. Connemara is where the Hollywood movie "The Quiet Man" starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara was made, which launched Ireland's tourism industry, in full technicolour, onto the world's holiday market in the 1950's. We have come a long way since then but the scenery has not changed much, it's still there in all its unspoiled glory for you to rediscover this year, the year of the Wild Atlantic Way.
