Built on the banks of the River Moy, Ballina is often called the “Salmon Angling Capital” of Ireland and each summer many anglers make the annual pilgrimage to the River Moy to experience the impressive numbers of Salmon and Grisle (A grilse is an Atlantic Salmon which has spent only one winter at sea before returning to the river) that enter the river on virtually every tide.

During the summer the “Ham” bridge which divides the ‘Ridge’ and ‘Cathedral’ pools is lined with tourists watching the grisle show, jump and struggle as the anglers battle with them. It is not unusual for several fish to leap in the air at any one time. A truly amazing sight to see.

Fishing in Ireland states that "The average annual Salmon rod catch on the Moy over the last ten years is a staggering 7,362 fish. The famous Ridge Pool alone has produced up to 2,660 Salmon to rod and line in a single season".
