Historical places of Interest | County Tipperary

County Tipperary has a wealth of historical places to visit. Did you know that there are a total of 18 different castles in the county? Rock of Cashel

This world famous site also known as St Patrick’s Rock is a collection of buildings from the 12th and 13th centuries including a castle, round tower, Romanesque chapel and cathedral which are linked together as one building. The entire site is surrounded by a large wall which also encircles an extensive graveyard with a number of high crosses. According to local mythology, it originated in a mountain called the Devil’s Bit, north of Cashel, where St. Patrick banished Satan from a cave, resulting in the Rock’s landing in Cashel. Brian Boru, High King of Ireland, was also crowned here in 977. The site has one of the most remarkable collections of Celtic art and medieval architecture to be found anywhere in Europe and is well worth a visit. (Main image at top)

Ormond Castle

Ormond Castle, situated in the picturesque town of Carrick-on-Suir, consists of the Castle and a Tudor Manor house. The castle was largely built between the 14th and mid 16th centuries. The towers to the South date from the 15th Century. The building of the Tudor Manor House is recorded as having taken place almost 100 years later. It is reputed to be the best preserved Elizabethan Manor House in Ireland – the long gallery in the house contains some of the finest decorative plasterwork to be seen in the country.

Cahir Castle

Cahir Castle is one of Ireland’s largest and best preserved castles. It is situated on a island on the River Suir.

Once the stronghold of the powerful Butler family, the castle retains its impressive tower and much of its original defensive structure. To cater for visitors, the castle has guided tours and audiovisual shows in multiple languages.
