Ireland's Ancient East

It‘s with great excitement that visitors to Ireland will be able to experience the wealth of heritage and culture that Ireland has to offer through the newly launched ‘Ireland’s Ancient East’ experience.

Fáilte Ireland have launched a new initative called 'Ireland's Ancent East', where visitors will have access to a well sign-posted path through the east and south of Ireland, stretching from Newgrange to Boyne Valley in the north east, and travelling through the Midlands all the way down via Kilkenny’s Medieval Mile to Waterford’s Viking Quarter and Cork’s many cultural attractions. With Ireland’s abundance of historical attractions, visitors can tread where legends were born and see the amazing historical sites that are an integral part of the beauty of Ireland today.

With the west of Ireland having the popular Wild Atlantic Way coastal route, stretching from Donegal to Cork, the east and south of Ireland can now showcase their wonderful historical touring region, stretching from Meath to Cork. As part of the 'Ireland's Ancent East' experience visitors can also enjoy the stunning Irish countryside, stop off and explore Ireland's friendly towns and villages, take in a festival, sample local cuisine and stay in accommodation run by local Irish families.

Ireland's Historical Journey

Ireland’s Ancient East will focus on distinct elements of Ireland’s historical journey:

Ancient Ireland - The Dawn of Civilisation, including the prehistoric attractions of the Boyne Valley in Newgrange and sites such as the Brownshill Dolmen in Carlow.

Early Christian Ireland - sites such as Clonmacnoise, Glendalough, Mellifont Abbey, Jerpoint Abbey, St.Canice’s Cathedral and Holycross Abbey.

Medieval Ireland - sites such as Kilkenny’s Medieval Mile, the Viking Quarter in Waterford, Hook Head Lighthouse, Trim Castle and the Rock of Cashel.

Anglo Ireland - Ireland’s Great Houses and Gardens as well as sites such as the Dunbrody Famine Ship and Wicklow Gaol.
