Meet Your Host | Mary & Liam Lipsett

Welcome back to our weekly 'Meet Your Host' interview. This week we're off to the West and into the heartland of County Sligo catching up with B&B hosts Mary and Liam Lipsett who run Mountain Inn B&B. Mountain Inn is a family run B&B with a quaint and welcoming pub attached. Mary and Liam have been welcoming guests to their door for more than 30 years now and enjoy meeting new people and are always at hand to share their in-depth knowledge of Sligo and the Wild Atlantic Way. Find out everything there is to know about Mary and Liam and their family run B&B below.

What are the hidden gems close to your home?

Our Guesthouse is located in the heart of County Sligo so we are within close proximity to the many wonders that Sligo exhibits. One gem that stands out in particular is 'The Ladies Brae', relatively unknown but it is a crossing point in the Ox Mountain Range in which our B&B nestles.

What is your favourite guest story?

One guest who stayed with us 16 years ago decided to visit our bar attached to the B&B. Whilst he was there he got into a conversation with a female guest who was reading a book by the fire. He had read the same book before and instantly struck up conversation about the storyline. Little did he know, she would turn out to be the woman he would marry and have 3 kids with. They now live happily in London for the past 12 years or so but return to us once a year for a weekend break!

What is your signature dish/food?

Our Traditional Irish Breakfast is well respected by all who stay with us. Our next favourite option would have to be Fresh Smoked Salmon and homemade bread.

Is there anything about your home that is quirky?

There is a quiet little pub attached to the Bed & Breakfast where guests can relax by the fire and read or enjoy a Guinness and blend in with the locals!

Have you ever had any famous guests?

We have had many famous guests:

  • Gregg Zaun - Professional Major league baseball catcher
  • Justin Hayward - The Moody Blues
  • The Dubliners
  • Christy Moore
  • Daniel O'Donnell

What is your favourite thing about the area you live in?

The peace and quiet of a beautiful little village 'Coolaney' which has won Tidy Towns awards every year for more than a decade. The rugged Ox Mountains hides away a vast number of nature trails.
Close enough to Sligo town but far enough to enjoy the splendour of the countryside.

When you are not looking after your guests what is your favourite thing to do?

We like to walk along Culleenamore Strand near Strandhill and inhale the fresh Atlantic breeze.

What are your top three attractions in this country?

  • Hillwalking
  • Castles
  • Traditional Irish Music

We would like to thank Mary and Liam for taking the time to share with us an insight into their home. If you would like to find out more about Mary and Liam's Bed and Breakfast make sure to check out The Mountain Inn B&B.
