The Gobbins - A Dramatic Coastal Walk
Last week I had the pleasure of experiencing the Gobbins Coastal Walk and all I can say is 'what a spectacular tourist attraction'. From the breathtaking scenery to the wonderfully delivered tour, this attraction is definitely worth a visit.
The Gobbins Coastal Walk is a fabulous encounter with nature set on the very tip of the east coast with uninterrupted views of the Scottish coastline. Located just forty minutes drive from Belfast City; this is Northern Ireland’s ‘best kept secret’.
This dramatic cliff face path with spectacular bridges, tunnels and stair cases first opened to the public in 1902. The mastermind behind this magnificent tourist attraction was Berkeley Deane Wise, an Irish railway engineer. Ahead of his time, he wanted to attract tourism to this spectacular part of Ireland. For years many flocked to the area to enjoy the surroundings however after falling into disrepair in the 1950's the path was closed. Over six decades later, the path has been restored and upgraded and is now one of Northern Ireland's top tourist attractions.
The Tour and Visitor Centre
The amazing journey begins at an informative visitor centre where you will be greeted by your tour guide, they will take you through a quick safety video; you then travel on a bus (5 minutes drive) out to the beginning of the trail. The trek is up to three hours, walking along impressive bridges, steps and paths of discovery. The tour guide stops at different stages during the tour to explain the history, the structure and flora and fauna in the area – very interesting I must say.
My Top Tips:
-
Wear warm clothes and bring a rain jacket (just in case!)
-
Bring some water on the trek as you may get thirsty
-
Wear the correct footwear (Check their website for more details on this)
-
Bring a camera and take lots of pictures on route.
-
The guides are very friendly so ask lots of questions!
