St Patrick's Day Celebrations
St Patrick’s Day celebrations were nearly as big as Christmas when I was growing up. Maybe it was because we were living in England at the time and it seemed so important to celebrate our Irish heritage. It was a massive family day, where the community congregated in the local Irish Centre for a singsong, some Irish dancing and ahem…a few refreshments.
St Patrick’s Day Dublin
When we moved back home to Ireland, I soon realised that no matter where you live, Irish people celebrate St Patrick’s Day the same all over the world. Although, to be fair, the Emerald Isle does do it the best! Dublin City put on a fantastic four day festival and it’s an amazing event, with loads of street music and theatre, funfairs, walking tours and one of the biggest and most extravagant parades outside New York. In fact, every city, town and village across Ireland goes all out on March 17th. There are always colourful parades, fantastic entertainment and happy folk, all dressed up in forty shades of green, having the most wonderful time!

Going Green!
It just goes to show what a strong connection Ireland has to every corner of the world, when countries illuminate their major landmarks and iconic sites in green to celebrate St Patrick’s Day. Sites such as the Sydney Opera House in Australia and the 7 World Trade Centre at Ground Zero in New York light up in green in recognition for Ireland and its people. It’s mind-blowing to think that there are more than 70 million people around the world with links to Ireland and St Patrick’s Day is the perfect way for everyone to connect with their Irish heritage.
Hopefully you will choose the Emerald Isle as your celebration destination, but if that is not possible, then have a wonderful St Patrick’s Day wherever you are!
