Walking trails not to be missed along the Wild Atlantic Way
The Wild Atlantic Way is one of the most spectacular experiences Ireland has to offer, taking in over 2000km of striking coastline. Starting in Inishowen in Co Donegal, ending in Kinsale, Co Cork, and covering Sligo, Mayo, Galway, Clare, Limerick and Kerry in between, it’s no surprise that the route encompasses some of the most stunning coastal walks in the entire world. Walking allows you to completely immerse yourself in the natural beauty of your surroundings, taking you on a unique adventure that is only accessible on foot. There are countless walking trails not to be missed along the Wild Atlantic Way, with some of my favourites mentioned below.
The Inishowen Head Loop
The Inishowen Head Loop is a great place to start your Wild Atlantic Way experience. The 8km looped trail is of moderate difficulty, and is the perfect way to explore Donegal’s rugged coastline. Inishowen Head is an ancient territory, dotted with Celtic crosses, monuments and towers. This fascinating history, coupled with the breath-taking scenery, makes it an unmissable trail.
Distance: 8km ...Estimated Time: 2 - 2.5 hrs...Grade: Moderate
The Burren Way
The Burren Way encompasses a large section of the Wild Atlantic Way, stretching 123km from Lahinch to Corofin, and taking up to 5 days to complete. This walking route is simply magical, offering up some of the most impressive views along Ireland’s coast. As well as these panoramic sights, the trail also leads you through two of the island’s most iconic attractions, the Burren and the Cliffs of Moher. In short, this walking route is the perfect showcase of what makes Ireland so special.
Distance: 123kms...Estimated Time: 5 days...Grade: Moderate to Difficult
The Seven Heads Walk
The Seven Heads Walk is a stunning 42km journey along the Seven Heads Peninsula in West Cork. What’s fantastic about this walkway is that there are several routes to choose from, depending on the level of difficulty or the time that suits the walker. The trail takes in a variety of different landscapes, historical sites and natural beauty, making it quite the memorable experience.
Distance: 42km...Estimated Time: Dependant on route choice...Grade: Choose from moderate to difficult.
These three trails are only a tiny taster of the fantastic walks that exist along the Wild Atlantic Way. So, grab your walking boots and get exploring, because it’s time to make some unforgettable memories in Ireland.
