Useful Gaeilge phrases for your visit to Ireland!
They say the best way to experience a new country is to immerse yourself in the culture of the local area and what better way to do this than to learn a few words in the local language? Irish, also referred to as Gaeilge, is the native language of Ireland, and so if you are planning to visit Ireland, here is a list of a few phrases in Gaeilge that you may be able to use along your travels -
Dia duit (gee-a ditch) = Hello
Maidin mhaith (ma–jean why) = Good morning
Óiche mhaith (ee-ha why) = Goodnight
Slán (Slawn) = Goodbye
Conas atá tú? (cun-is a-ta too) = How are you?
Tá mé go maith (ta may go my-h) = I am well
Go raibh maith agat (go row my-h a-gut) = Thank you
Le do thoil (le do hull) = Please
Tá fáilte romhat (ta fal-cha ro-hut) = You’re welcome
Gabh mo leithscéal (Go mo lesh-kale) = Excuse me
Cad is aimn duit? (Cad is an-um ditch) = What is your name?
____ is ainm duit (___ is an-um ditch) = ____ is my name
Craic agus ceol (crack ug-is keo-ul) = Fun and music
Sláinte! (slan- cha) = Cheers!
