Irish Soda Bread Recipe

More than likely, you will find freshly baked soda bread on your breakfast table when staying in an Irish B&B. It’s a delicious bread that has been a staple in Irish households for many years. B&B hosts like to bake their own soda bread daily, with many using recipes handed down through generations. Try this no fuss Irish Soda Bread recipe for yourself, it’s so easy to prepare and will go down a treat with everyone.

IngredientsTraditional Irish Soda Bread

4 cups (580g) plain flour
1 1/2   teaspoons of baking soda
1 teaspoon of salt
2 cups (470mls) of cold buttermilk

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (218 0c). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or grease well and set aside. If you prefer, you can also use an 8" greased cake ban.

  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda and salt. Now stir in the buttermilk just until the dough is combined and it starts to become too stiff to stir. Transfer to a floured work surface and lightly knead the dough around 5-10 times or until all the flour comes together.

  3. Arrange the dough into an 8” round shape and place it on the prepared baking sheet. With a knife cut a ¼” deep X on the top.

  4. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Irish soda bread is so tasty served warm with a smear of butter.
The bread will keep for 2-3 days when wrapped well and stored at room temperature.
