Ten reasons we love staying in Ireland's B&Bs
Kate and Mike Lancor who live in New Hampshire, USA were last in Ireland in 2019. They usually holiday in Ireland every year and always stay in Irish Family Homes, but were unable to do so in 2020 due to the pandemic. They would like to share their past B&B adventures with you. #FillYourHeartWithIreland
1. A warm and friendly greeting always awaits us when the front door opens.
Hostess Bridie Herlihy welcomes guests to her exquisite dining room at Berkeley Lodge in Adare, Co. Limerick.
Adare has a treasure trove of historic sites, pubs and restaurants.
2. 'Chasing' one’s ancestors is as popular in Ireland as it is in the U.S. and elsewhere.
Kate sharing family genealogy records with Denise and hostess Brid Fitzpatrick at Glenraha Farmhouse B&B in Mullinavat, Co. Kilkenny.
Kate’s mother was a Fitzpatrick!
3. The scenic views from Ireland’s B&Bs can be absolutely breath taking.
Amazing view of Bantry Bay from Dromcloc House in Co. West Cork. Hosts Dymphna and Johnny Crowley were full of stories and legends about Sheep’s Head Peninsula
4. B&B hosts take great pride in serving the traditional “Full Irish Breakfast”.
Phyllis McGovern at Ashleigh House B&B in Co. Waterford is known for her award winning Brown Bread, but as you can see she also prepares a fantastic “Full Irish Breakfast”!
5. If you are “chasing” your own ancestors, B&B hosts are great at making connections.
Patio and gardens at Slidala B&B in Roscrea, Co. Tipperary. Host Marie Warren arranged for Kate to get a firsthand look at her great grandmother’s 1831 baptism record in Templemore.
6. Hosts are always willing to reach out to others on your behalf. Don’t be too shy to ask.
Hosts Luke & Ann Fitzgerald (right) at Dawn B&B in Co. Waterford connected Kate with two long-lost cousins in Ballydurn where Kate’s Regan ancestors lived in the 1850s.
7. Welcome treats have included scones, apple pie, brown bread and even Irish whiskey.
The charming dining room at Ashville House B&B run by hosts Rose and Tim O’Keefe in Tralee, Co. Kerry. This was our base to visit Mike’s long-lost cousins in Ballyheigue.
8. B&B owners know the local scoop: where to eat, sites to see and Trad music spots.
Margaret Dreenan’s baked goodies make breakfast a treat at Quarrytown Lodge in Ballymena, Co. Antrim. She served as our “unofficial guide” sending us to the Dark Hedges.
9. Sharing conversation over breakfast with B&B guests from all over the globe.
Eileen and Tony Mulhern at Ardlenagh View B&B, Co. Donegal where we met a German couple who we ran into again in Waterford a week later. A small world story indeed!
10. Each B&B provides an opportunity for friendship and a new adventure!
