10 St Patrick’s Day Fun Facts
St Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. We celebrate St Patrick’s Day on March 17th because that is the day Saint Patrick died. It is one of the biggest festivals that takes place on the island of Island to celebrate Irish heritage and culture. Because of Ireland’s strong connections across the globe, St Patrick’s Day is also celebrated throughout the world.
Below are 10 St Patrick’s Day fun facts. How many do you know?
1. Croagh Patrick in Co Mayo is named in honour of Ireland’s patron saint. It was on this mountain that St Patrick spent the 40 days of Lent fasting. The climb is now a tradition that is handed down through generations.
2. Downpatrick is known for being St Patrick’s final resting place. His body lies under the Memorial Stone in the grounds of the glorious Down Cathedral.
3. According to legend, St Patrick banished Satan from a nearby mountain cave. In a fury, Satan took a bite from the mountain and spat it out creating the Rock of Cashel, also known as 'St. Patrick's Rock’.
4. Did you know that Boston, Massachusetts was the first place in the world to celebrate St Patrick’s Day in 1737?
5. Green is the colour synonymous with March 17th but did you know that the colour most commonly associated with St Patrick was actually blue?
6. Did you know iconic buildings all over the world will go green to celebrate St Patrick’s Day?
7. Lá Fhéile Pádraig Sona Dhuit means Happy St Patrick’s Day to you in Irish! (Pronounced: Law Fay-la Paw-rick sun-uh dit.)
8. Sláinte! Which means a toast to your good health in Irish (Pronounded: slahn-cha.)
9. Contrary to popular legend, St Patrick didn’t banish snakes from Ireland – snakes never existed in the first place!
