Traditional Irish Soda Bread
Ingredients (Serves 6–8)
-
450g plain flour
-
1 teaspoon baking soda
-
1 teaspoon salt
-
350–400ml buttermilk
(Optional: 1 teaspoon sugar, or a handful of raisins for a sweeter variation.)
Method
-
Preheat your oven to 200°C (180°C fan). Lightly flour a baking tray.
-
Mix the dry ingredients — sift the flour, baking soda and salt into a large bowl.
-
Add the buttermilk gradually, mixing with your hand or a wooden spoon until a soft dough forms. The dough should be slightly sticky but not wet.
-
Shape the loaf into a round and place it on the tray.
-
Score a deep cross on top with a sharp knife — traditionally said to “let the fairies out” and bless the bread.
-
Bake for 30–35 minutes until golden brown and sounding hollow when tapped underneath.
-
Cool slightly on a wire rack before slicing.
Serving Suggestion
Enjoy thick slices with:
-
Generous Irish butter
-
Local jam or marmalade
-
Smoked salmon
-
