Meet your host | Miriam Barry

Miriam Barry – The Old Bank B&B, Limerick

This week we are meeting Miriam Barry from The Old Bank B&B in Bruff, Co.Limerick Miriam, her husband Pat and family restored this historic banking town house as a 4 star B&B. Previously a retail manager she decided that home was where the heart was and welcomed her first guests on the 17th June 2008.

What are the hidden gems close to your home?

Lough Gur is a magical place that is rich in folklore along with a wealth of archaeology and history dating back to Stone Age times and Great Grange Stone Circle – Ireland’s largest stone circle! The Heritage Centre provides a fascinating interpretation of the sites associated with Lough Gur.

Recently seen on TV… Old Irish Ways is a Museum with individual areas such as a pub, school and kitchen showing what it was like to live in the 1900’s at one of the best exhibitions of 19th & 20th century living in the country

Ballyhoura Mountains and region boasts 10% of Irelands national loops walk as well as 96km of Mountain bike track which is Europe's largest Mountain bike park.

What is your favourite guest story?

My breakfast area is sometimes like a confessional, the stories that are most special to me are from people who were given up at birth and have come to find out “who they are”. There has been tears and laughter and a few surprise relations along the way..

What is your signature dish/food?

My husband Pat the “Butcher” supplies all our sausages, bacon, puddings and our eggs come from the local Egg Farm. My Daughter is a Coeliac and I make sure that all guests with dietary requirements don’t leave hungry.

Is there anything about your home that is quirky?

Our Home is more than 300 years old and was formerly a Bank… The Vault still takes deposits today, But they are non refundable.

Have you ever had any famous guests?

Hector (Irish TV/radio presenter), Ruth Scott (radio), The Munster Rugby team ( Simon Zebo, Ian Keatley etc) and a Saudi Princess that came with her body guard.

What is your favourite thing about the area you live in?

The community spirit - it’s a great town and my guests always talk about how friendly people are and there has been many a peak cap swapped in the local pubs. One publican made a tin foil slitter last week to show some Americans how to play hurling.

This year alone the community will complete a children’s playground after developing the John Fitzgerald Kennedy (JFK) trail.

When you are not looking after your guests what is your favourite thing to do?

I love to sneak off to my mothers Hair & Beauty salon and get treated.. Other wise it’s a child free stroll around the shops in Limerick.

What are your top 3 attractions in this county?

  • Lough Gur
  • King John Castle
  • Ballyhoura Mountains

We'd like to thank Miriam for taking part today.  For more details on her home check out The Old Bank B&B
