What are the hidden gems close to your home?
-
Powerscourt Gardens and Waterfall (Right on our doorstep)
-
Johnny Fox's Pub - One of the oldest and most famous pubs in Ireland
-
Glendalough Valley
What is your favourite guest story?
It's difficult to pick just one story as every guest has one but we had one lovely couple stay with us and the boyfriend had planned a marriage proposal. We've had quite a few guests propose to their significant other but the boyfriend had chosen our own farm viewing point at the back of our home. My husband Robert has recently installed cast iron steps up to the viewing point to make it more accessible. At the top of the viewing point is a huge rock which looks out over Bray harbour and you can watch all the boats coming in... Very romantic! We were delighted to see the couple come back down, both with huge smiles on their faces.
What is your signature dish?
Well of course my best dish is a Full Irish Breakfast which always goes down a treat but guests go crazy over my homemade spice bread and homemade soda bread.
Is there anything about your home that is quirky?
Our home is over 130 years old but at the same time quite modern. The quirky thing about our home is Coco our little Connemara pony and Joey our Welsh filly horse. Children love to feed the two apples and carrots but I think the adult guests get more fun out of the two! My husband is also a sheep farmer. Lambing season starts on St. Patrick's Day and ends on the 1st May so its an exciting time of year at Coolakay House as you can see all the adorable lambs running around and being bottle fed.
Have you ever had any famous guests?
I don't believe we've had any famous guests stay with us however our home has been featured in two movies. Our home was filmed in P.S I Love You. You might remember when Holly (Hillary Swank) is out in the countryside and is very stressed. She lights up a cigarette on our foyer! I believe its at the time she meets Gerard Butler.
What is your favourite thing about the area you live in?
Well our location is my favourite thing. We're quite close to the Wicklow Mountains and they are absolutely stunning. I love our private viewing point that looks out over Bray Harbour that I mentioned earlier.
When you are not looking after your guests what is your favourite thing to do?
If I'm not looking after our guests then you'll find me in the garden. I love gardening, planting new flowers and maintaining the shrubbery.
What are your top three attractions in this country?
-
Powerscourt Gardens and Waterfall (Ireland's highest waterfall)
-
Portrush town in County Antrim
-
I'm originally a Fermanagh lady so I have to include the Marble Arch Caves!
We'd like to thank Yvonne for taking part in our interview and giving us an insight into Coolakay House B&B. For more information on Yvonne's home you can find it here.
