Cavan – The Ultimate Golfing and Angling Experience

Tucked in the heart of the island of Ireland, County Cavan often gets overlooked as a holiday destination. You might think to stop off for a bite to eat while on your way to the bright lights of the East or the rugged West of Ireland, but little did you know, Cavan is the perfect holiday destination for angling and golfing.

Cavan – A Golfer’s dream Getaway

Cavan may be small in size but has numerous championship golf courses to make up for it, 8 to be exact! County Cavan Golf Club is one of the oldest and most mature parkland courses in Ireland. The course is carved through the natural drumlin of Cavan and as it’s located in the lakeland county, expect water to come into play. It’s a very popular course in Cavan and must feature on any golfer’s itinerary when touring the county.

Ranked 26th in the top 100 parkland courses in Ireland, Farnham Estate Golf Resort is regarded as the finest course in the county. Set over 500 acres of countryside, this course will challenge any golfer regardless of skill level. Course designer, Jeff Howedes, has done Cavan proud with this course. Do expect a few double bogeys as the stunning scenery will distract you from your drive!

Slieve Russell Golf Course should be taken on by anyone looking for a challenge. Ranked 10th in the top parkland courses in Ireland, the course is situated on a 300 acre estate with over 50 acres of lakeland waiting to accept your challenge. Slieve Russel has played host to the Irish PGA Championship in 1996, a PGA Pro-AM and notable European Tour Events so you know your getting the cream of the crop when taking on the full 18.

Cavan – An Angler’s Paradise

If your tired of hitting golf balls into the lakes of the Cavan courses, then why not grab the fishing rod and head out on one of the lakes. Cavan is without a doubt one of Ireland’s premier fishing locations. Be it coarse, pike or game fishing, you’ll find it in Cavan. The River Erne and its main tributaries, the Shannon Erne Waterway and the Dromore/Annalee system dominate the middle of the county. Expect a high number bream, roach, rudd, perch and pike jumping on the end of your rod. If you’re in search of large open waters, there are several lakes to suit your taste. Gowna, Oughter, Sillan and the Upper Erne should be your locations of choice!

There are too many locations for you to choose from if you’re in search of game angling. Annagh Lake, Creenagh Lake and the renowned brown trout fishery at Lough Sheelin are just a handful of game angling spots in the county. There is no licence or fee required to enjoy coarse fishing in Cavan, however a licence is required when fishing for trout at any game fisheries so make sure to pick one up. Other than that all you need is your rod and supplies!
