County Galway Bucket List | Must See Sights & Attractions

Galway is one of Ireland’s most visited counties each year and for good reason. The county has a fantastic mixture of attractions which caters for everyone’s interests. Be it heritage, culture, sport or scenery, you’re sure to find it in the Tribal County.

Galway Must See Attractions

So if you’re thinking of journeying out West, here’s a taster of what should be included on your Galway bucket list.

Galway City

If Galway City will be your base, then a tour of the city is a must! Start off your day with a visit to the Cathedral along University Road. Situated along the bank of the River Corrib, this building is breathtaking and you don’t have to be religious to appreciate this attraction. It is the youngest stone cathedral in Europe. Make sure to pop inside and appreciate the stunning stained glass windows.

While on University Road, it would be rude not to take a gander over to Galway’s National University. The Quadrangle should be your next visit. This building first opened its doors to students in 1849 and was once one of three Queen’s Colleges. The building was constructed with local limestone and is definitely one for the photo album!

If you find yourself free in the evening, Galway is renowned for its quality night life. A visit to the pubs and restaurants down Quay Street is a must. You’ll encounter some of the best traditional Irish musicians playing throughout the pubs and you’re sure to find the tastiest pint of Guinness along the street.

Aran Islands

If the hustle and bustle of city life is getting a little too much, don’t worry as peace and serenity is just a boat ride away. The Aran Islands features highly on the list of things to see when touring the West. The island is an outdoor museum with Celtic churches and spectacular cliffs. The people are what makes the island so inviting and are always happy to help. While on the island, make sure take a tour of the cliffs and in your spare time make sure to pick up a famous Aran sweater to keep you warm!

Kylemore Abbey & Connemara

At first glance, you’d think you were standing on the set of a Game of Thrones episode. This beautiful Benedictine monastery is somewhat magical looking and is complemented by its location in the stunning countryside of Connemara. The Gothic Castle has quite a story behind it, of which you will learn when visiting. The rooms were carefully restored along with the miniature Gothic church. Kylemore Abbey is the largest tourist attraction in the West and should definitely be on your bucket list!

While in the area, take this chance to see the rest of what Connemara has to offer. The region is distinct and is made up of unspoilt rivers, lakes, hills and mountains, not to mention a rugged coastline like no other. Connemara is one of Ireland’s Gaeltacht regions and the area showcases the true Irish country lifestyle. It’s a gateway into the Irish culture and traditions and can only be experienced first hand.

Danabel Porridge Bread Recipe

I started making my Porridge Bread about a year ago. It was so popular with guests that I carried on making it. Now, I make it everyday and leave it on the breakfast table for my guests to help themselves. I am always complimented on how tasty it is. The wonderful thing about this recipe is that it is so easy to prepare, yet so delicious!
