Red Kite Walk in Avoca | Official Opening of Red Kite Walk

The community spirit is alive and well in Avoca Village in Co Wicklow! Locals have come together and worked tirelessly to ensure The Red Kite Walk is open and ready to welcome visitors in time for summer. Thanks to some grant aid and a lot of fundraising by the Avoca people, this 15 month labour of love is ready to be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. Speaking after the official launch of the Red Kite Walk in Avoca by Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Mr Michael Ring, Deputy Andrew Doyle reiterated the positive impact that Eco- tourism based community projects can have on our local towns and villages.

Red Kite Birds

Not only will walkers love this 2.5km trail, but birdwatchers are in for a real treat too! In 2009, The Golden Eagle Trust re-introduced a set of Red Kite birds into Kilmagig Forest. Now in 2014, there are 30 breeding pairs who have made their habitat around the Red Kite Walk, which is part of the forest. It is an amazing achievement as these birds were actually verging on extinction. Well signposted, this self-guided walk overlooks Avoca Village and you will enjoy stunning scenery along its route. There’s also a cemetery along the trail dating back to the 1800s, along with beautiful flora and fauna.

Avoca Village

The Picturesque village of Avoca is a great location to spend some leisure time. It has been welcoming visitors from all over the world for many years and provides all the amenities for the ideal holiday. From wonderful restaurants to friendly, value-for-money accommodation. The famous Ballykissangel TV drama was shot in Avoca from 1995 to 2002. You can take the Mill Tour and see the oldest working weaving mill in progress. It has been in operation since 1798! A visit to the Avoca shop is a real treat. Not to be missed is a visit to the Heritage Centre where you can view mining artefacts and genealogy records.

The community spirit is alive and well in Avoca Village, so expect a warm welcome when you take a trip to this wonderful region, enjoy the Red Kite Walk and the many wonderful amenities this lovely town has to offer.

Danabel Porridge Bread Recipe

I started making my Porridge Bread about a year ago. It was so popular with guests that I carried on making it. Now, I make it everyday and leave it on the breakfast table for my guests to help themselves. I am always complimented on how tasty it is. The wonderful thing about this recipe is that it is so easy to prepare, yet so delicious!
