Meet Your Host | Bernie Cosgrove

Friday's meet your host interview comes all the way from the popular town of Lisdoonvarna. Meet Bernie Cosgrove, B&B host at St. Judes Bed and Breakfast. Bernie has been in the B&B business for over 40 years and has welcomed visitors from every corner of the globe. St. Judes is ideally located just ten minutes walk from the town centre and is the perfect base for touring the Burren and the Cliffs of Moher. Find out everything there is to know about Bernie and her B&B below in this week's meet your host interview.

What are the hidden gems close to your home?

  • Doolin
  • The Cliffs of Moher
  • The Burren
  • The Aran Islands

Each are unique and equally beautiful!

What is your favourite guest story?

I've been in business for over 40 years now and have so many stories but to pick one would be impossible!

What is your signature dish/food?

Lamb would definitely be my signature dish but my full Irish breakfast isn't far behind.

Is there anything about your home that is quirky?

I would have to say that I am!

Have you ever had any famous guests?

I don't think we have had any famous guests but many years ago we had a pilot along with his helicopter arrive and stayed with us. You can be sure that the whole town of Lisdoonvarna called by to say hello.

What is your favourite thing about the area you live in?

I would definitely have to say that my favourite thing about Lisdoonvarna is its sights and attractions. There's just so much to do. We're a stones throw away from the Cliffs of Moher, one of Ireland's busiest and beautiful natural attractions. Lisdoonvarna is also located in the Burren, a unique landscape that's steeped in history. We also have the Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival which is one of Ireland's oldest festivals. You can also take a quick trip out to the Aran Islands and discover the Irish island life. So there's always something to do or something to see and that's what I love the most about Lisdoonvarna.

When you are not looking after your guests what is your favourite thing to do?

If I'm not looking after guests I just love finding the time to relax and read a book. It's the little things.

What are your top three attractions in this country?

  • The Cliffs of Moher
  • The Killarney lakes and hills
  • The Burren

We would like to thank Bernie for taking the time to take part in our meet your host interview. If your thinking of taking a trip out West to discover the gems that Clare has to offer make sure to check out St. Judes Bed and Breakfast.

At West Coast House B&B you can taste Achill Island Smoked Salmon

When you stay at West Coast House on Achill Island in County Mayo, you will have the opportunity to taste the island’s delicacy of smoked salmon.  The salmon is reared in pristine waters off Clare Island/Achill and is prepared and oak smoked at Keem Bay Fish Products, which is just 0.4km from our bed and breakfast.

Danabel Porridge Bread Recipe

I started making my Porridge Bread about a year ago. It was so popular with guests that I carried on making it. Now, I make it everyday and leave it on the breakfast table for my guests to help themselves. I am always complimented on how tasty it is. The wonderful thing about this recipe is that it is so easy to prepare, yet so delicious!
