Meet Your Host | Elizabeth McBride
Today we find ourselves on the outskirts of Crumlin, a quaint town in County Antrim, catching up with our host of the week, Elizabeth McBride of Bay Cottage Bed and Breakfast. You'll find this home on the banks of Lough Neagh, the largest lake in Northern Ireland. Elizabeth and her family love welcoming guests to their home which is a perfect base for touring the major attractions in Belfast and the Game of Thrones locations while still experiencing the peaceful countryside of Northern Ireland. One thing is for sure, your guaranteed a delightful breakfast each morning made from local produce courtesy of Elizabeth's friendly free range hens. What are the hidden gems close to your home?
Antrim town has several little gems such as the Round Tower and the witches stone and of course the wonderful Castle Grounds. The grounds of the local Agricultural College are worth a visit when open to the public and there are some lovely river walks.
What is your favourite guest story?
An Australian guest who left NI when he was a teenager stayed with us while he searched for a long lost cousin. Amazingly he found him after a gap of 40 years and has been back to spend time with him and his family. People come for all sorts of family occasions but that was particularly special.
What is your signature dish/food?
We use local produce whenever we can and have our own hens and their eggs ensure that our scrambled eggs are bright yellow and full flavoured.
Is there anything about your home that is quirky?
My husband says I wouldn't know what a quirk is!
Have you ever had any famous guests?
No, though I keep hoping that someone involved in Game of Thrones will come and stay but no luck so far despite some of the sets being in the locality.
What is your favourite thing about the area you live in?
The ever changing scenery of the Lough. There is very little light pollution so at night we have wonderful night skies.
When you are not looking after your guests, what is your favourite thing to do?
A day out with my family involving morning coffee, an antique shop or two and tea and cake in the afternoon.
