Love Ballykissangel, Love Avoca

Ballykissangel was a really popular television drama back in the 1990s and the picturesque village of Avoca in Co Wicklow, was the actual setting for this iconic series. The drama focused on an English priest who was transferred to a rural village in Ireland, namely Ballykissangel, and all the trials and tribulations he encountered. It was extremely popular in its day and now, thanks to streaming, has a renewed success and is being enjoyed by American audiences.

Colin Farrell, Hollywood is calling!

It is amazing to think that Balllykissangel launched the career of Irish Hollywood actor Colin Farrell! When on location in Avoca, he actually stayed with one of our B&Bs, Cherrybrook Country House. Bernie, the host of Cherrybrook, has fond memories of Colin and the cast of Ballykissangel. The series also launched the careers of Devla Kirwin and Victoria Smurfit.

Avoca Village

Avoca Village is a popular tourist town, set on the River Avoca, and welcomes visitors from all over the world. With lots to see and do, visitors will love to explore the many delights this beautiful village has to offer. You can take a tour of Avoca’s Handweavers and Mill, which is the oldest working mill in Ireland, dating back to 1723. Avoca Shop is a special experience and the Heritage Centre houses mining artefacts and genealogy records.  There are lovely restaurants, welcoming pubs and Avoca B&B accommodation, where you will experience true Irish hospitality.

County Wickow provides everything that adds up to the ideal holiday destination and Avoca Village is the perfect base for your adventure.  From walking, cycling, angling to mountain climbing, there is no end to the outdoor leisure pursuits. There’s a really great walking trail just outside of Avoca Village. Well signposted, the Red Kite Walk is 2.5km of hiking bliss. Birdwatchers will love this trail as there are 30 breeding pairs of Red Kite birds inhabiting the forest which forms part of the walk. Whether you’re going to visit Ballykissangel or Avoca village, neither one will disappoint!
