Meet Your Host | Bernie Ivers | Cherrybrook Country Home

Our Meet Your Host feature returns once again this Friday. This week we find ourselves in the stunning County of Wicklow with our host Bernie Ivers of Cherrybrook Country Home.

What is/are the hidden gems close to your home? Secluded beach, walk, restaurant etc

Avoca Handweavers

The Birthplace of the Avoca experience, and the origin of the family company's name, Avoca Handweavers, this is a famous tourist destination, as well as a long time favourite among the Wicklow community.

Wicklow Mountains National Park

The park extends over 20,000 hectares of upland mountain scenery and welcomes visitors all year round.

What is your favourite guest story?

We have so many guests’ stories… its hard to just think of one.  But what I will say is we have made many life long friends through the B&B.

If you have one, what is your signature dish/food – eg brown bread, jam, cake, local sausages, eggs from farm etc?

My very own: Bernie’s Barnbrack – Perfect with a nice cuppa tea!

Is there anything about your home that is quirky? Historical, structural etc

What draws people’s attention to our home is our conservatory. Many love to take the opportunity to have breakfast in there. They find it very relaxing; taking in the scenery while enjoying a home cooked Irish Breakfast.

Have you ever had any famous guests?

Well now that I think of it – we have had many of the cast of Ballykissangel stay here. Ballykissangel was a 90’s tv programme set in the heart of Avocca. You may remember that Colin Farrell began his acting career on this show. We had the pleasure of Colin staying with us here at Cherrybrook B&B.

What is your favourite thing about the area you live in?

My favourite thing about the area is that I grew up here and have enjoyed every minute of it.

When you are not looking after your guests what is your favourite thing to do?

I am heavily involved in my local community and really enjoy working on many programmes organised by the locals.

What are your top 3 attractions in this county?

  • Avoca Handweavers
  • Glendalough
  • Avondale

We'd like to thank Bernie for taking part in the interview. For more information on her home you can go to Cherrybrook Country Home.

At West Coast House B&B you can taste Achill Island Smoked Salmon

When you stay at West Coast House on Achill Island in County Mayo, you will have the opportunity to taste the island’s delicacy of smoked salmon.  The salmon is reared in pristine waters off Clare Island/Achill and is prepared and oak smoked at Keem Bay Fish Products, which is just 0.4km from our bed and breakfast.

Danabel Porridge Bread Recipe

I started making my Porridge Bread about a year ago. It was so popular with guests that I carried on making it. Now, I make it everyday and leave it on the breakfast table for my guests to help themselves. I am always complimented on how tasty it is. The wonderful thing about this recipe is that it is so easy to prepare, yet so delicious!
