Meet Your Host | Mari & Mick Hanly

Glendine | Clonakilty CorkMari & Mick Hanly - Glendine Bed and Breakfast, Clonakilty, Cork

Mari & Mick have been running their B&B for many years along with their two sons and two dogs in the beautiful town of Clonakilty, Co. Cork. They have kindly welcomed us into their home to discover the hidden gems that this B&B and its surroundings have to offer.

What is/are the hidden gems close to your home? Secluded beach, walks, restaurants etc

  • Homestead of General Michael Collins and Michael Collins Centre
  • Drombeg Stone Circle
  • Model Railway Village

What is your favourite guest story?

Lost in Translation

We had two German girls booked in to stay one night. They contacted us to let us know that their flight was delayed and it would be quite late by the time they reached us in the evening. They eventually made it to us at about 2am in the morning.

We met them at the door and they looked really tired after their journey.  Feeling really concerned about them, Mari said to them ‘You must be exhausted?’ to which one of the girls replied ‘No…..I am Anna!!!!!!!!’

If you have one, what is your signature dish/food – eg brown bread, jam, cake, local sausages, eggs from farm etc?

While we do make our own brown and white soda bread and our eggs are from our own hens, our signature item is the muffins that we treat our guests to on arrival. During the summer months the rhubarb muffins are a particular favourite while our apple and cinnamon muffins are the winter favourites.

Is there anything about your home that is quirky? Historical, structural etc

Glendine Irish Home probably has one of the most unusual offers for guests. If you are staying in Glendine Irish Home for 3 nights or more Mick will take you, on his Honda Goldwing motor cycle, for a coastal tour of Clonakilty Bay, Inchydoney Island, Dunmore, Ardfield, Red Strand, Long Strand, Owenhincha, Castlefreke and Rathbarry, weather permitting.

The tour taken in 'Driving Miss Daisy' mode takes approximately 1 hour. The 'White Knuckle Ride' version takes only 15 minutes (only joking)!!!!

Have you ever had any famous guests?

Glendine B&B CorkFintan O’Toole, assistant editor of the Irish Times, stayed seeking Mick’s incisive insight into the Irish political and economic landscape.

Glendine B&B ClonakiltyKevin Dundon, renowned TV chef, stayed hoping to pick up a few tricks from the maestro on rustling up a classic hearty Irish breakfast.

What is your favourite thing about the area you live in?

The pace of life. Clonakilty is a wonderful, vibrant coastal town with fabulous community spirit and some terrific characters.

When you are not looking after your guests what is your favourite thing to do?

Mari & Mick are avid Motor Cycle enthusiasts regularly taking to the roads of Ireland, England and the Continent of their trusty Honda Goldwing 1500 named ‘Rosebud’. They were one of the first to take on the Wild Atlantic Way last in June 2014

What are your top 3 attractions in this county?

  • Blarney Castle -  Blarney
  • Jameson Distillary – Midleton
  • Fota Wildlife Park – Fota Island

We'd like to thank Mari & Mick for taking part in the interview. For more information on their home you can go to Glendine Bed and Breakfast.

At West Coast House B&B you can taste Achill Island Smoked Salmon

When you stay at West Coast House on Achill Island in County Mayo, you will have the opportunity to taste the island’s delicacy of smoked salmon.  The salmon is reared in pristine waters off Clare Island/Achill and is prepared and oak smoked at Keem Bay Fish Products, which is just 0.4km from our bed and breakfast.

Danabel Porridge Bread Recipe

I started making my Porridge Bread about a year ago. It was so popular with guests that I carried on making it. Now, I make it everyday and leave it on the breakfast table for my guests to help themselves. I am always complimented on how tasty it is. The wonderful thing about this recipe is that it is so easy to prepare, yet so delicious!
