Monaghan, also known as the county of the little hills, is a beautiful region in the North West of Ireland. The great Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh was born in Inniskeen in 1904 and his county provided inspiration for many of his great works.

Heritage

The county is rich in history and heritage with castles, monasteries, high crosses and churches waiting to be explored. St Macartan’s Cathedral, Monaghan County Museum and the classical 18th century Market House are places to visit if you are interested in learning about the local heritage.

Sport

With over sixty rivers and lakes including Lough Muckno, Lough Major and Emy Lough, Monaghan is the perfect location for angling and water-sports. There are fabulous walking and cycling routes in the region, with golfing and horse-riding well catered for. Lough Muckno Leisure Park is 365 hectare area of lake and forest, ideal for golf and fishing.
