The Wild Atlantic Way Feels the Force

Star Wars, as everyone knows, is an epic intergalactic film franchise, that from the very beginning, became a global phenomenon. Hence, it’s no surprise that when location scouts for Star Wars: The Last Jedi were seeking places that were out of this world, Ireland was a firm favourite. They were captivated by the spectacular landscapes along the Wild Atlantic Way, and choose to film in a range of amazing locations, spanning from Donegal, all the way down to Kerry.

Skellig Michael and the Dingle Peninsula, Kerry

Possibly the most well-known film location is that of Skellig Michael in Co Kerry, which features as a Jedi temple in both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. The UNESCO world heritage site is undeniably breath-taking, with the island off the coast of Kerry providing dramatic scenery and stunning shots of the characters towering over the Atlantic Ocean.

Also, in Co Kerry, The Last Jedi features Ceann Sibéal, or Sybil Head, a magnificent headland on the Dingle Peninsula. Here, replicas of Skellig Micheal’s ancient beehive huts were built, in order to somewhat preserve the heritage site. A visit to the area promises outstanding views, but also adventure, as you can choose to paddle board under Ceann Sibéal itself.

Brow Head, Cork and Loop Head, Clare

Co Cork’s Brow Head also can be spotted in the film. The county’s rugged coastline and fantastic landscapes provide a spectacular backdrop to the story. Loop Head in Co Clare is another chosen location, which is unsurprising due to its abundance of dramatic scenery. Loop Head is not only known for its impressive lighthouse, but also for its idyllic location.

Malin Head, Donegal

Finally, of course, the majestic Malin Head, in Co Donegal, could not be overlooked by the legendary film, forming part of ‘Planet Ahch-to’. A 10ft high space-age construction, the Millenium Falcon, was balanced on the very edge of Ireland’s most northerly point during filming.

Overall, the Wild Atlantic Way has its own magic, aside from Star Wars’ influence. That being said, the excitement brought by the world’s biggest film franchise is undeniable!
