An Unforgettable Farmstay

Josef Muller from Bonn, Germany tells of his Farmstay Adventure

Every year my wife and I take our two children, Anna (7) and Niklas (5), on a summer holiday. Since we live in Frankfurt, we always try to go to the country or seaside somewhere in Europe, to give the family a break from city life. After a couple of years of staying in Germany, we decided to take a longer journey this year and spend the holiday in Ireland.

Real Farmhouse Life

My wife Martina and I thought it would be nice to introduce our children to farm life, and with so many Irish B&Bs being located on working farms, it was easy to do. We chose one in the heart of the country, in Co. Offaly, where there are the rolling green hills Ireland is famous for. The owners Brian and Aileen live in a fantastic old Georgian farmhouse and raise cattle and sheep in addition to keeping a small flock of chickens and a vegetable garden.

Feeling like Family

When we arrived, we immediately felt like family. The B&B hosts were so welcoming and provided tea, coffee and cake – and apple juice for the kids too. It only got better from there; Brian and Aileen took us out onto the farm with them several times, showing us how they care for their animals and what they had growing in the garden. The kids were most interested in the sheep, especially the lambs that had been born earlier in the summer. The pet donkeys were another highlight of our stay; the children had to see them every morning, even before they had their breakfast. They also had fun picking vegetables in the garden – so much fun that they’ve insisted we create our ‘own little Ireland’ by planting a garden in our yard next summer.
