A Walking Holiday to Remember

Louise MacDonald of Aberdeen in Scotland tells us about walking in Ireland

I have been on walking holidays all over the world, but nothing prepared me for the beauty of the Beara Peninsula on the south-west coast of Ireland. My husband and I are in our 60s and like a walking holiday that will offer walks that are not too strenuous and the guarantee of good food and a comfortable bed at the end of the day.

Stunning Rugged Coastline

The Beara Peninsula offered all of that and more. Its rugged beauty offered stunning cliff and coastal walks. We even followed a flock of sheep across to Dursey Island in the country’s only cable car which was certainly a unique experience. When it came to working out an itinerary for each day, we really could not have done it without Jack and Ann, the B&B hosts of the incredible Walkers Welcome B&B we stayed at.

Help from our Hosts

They went above and beyond to make us feel at home and ensure we had a trip to remember. Ann sat with us while we planned our walking route and gave us some amazing tips on routes that we would have never taken had we followed a guide book. And best of all, they recommended some incredible places to eat – I have never eaten chowder quite like it. The bed and breakfast itself really was a home away from home. The rooms were beautiful. Every morning we were treated to a gourmet breakfast. In the evenings we came home to tea and a roaring fire. It was heaven.
